Triptych Case Study

In this project, students were charged with the task of creating a visually cohesive set of three images. Within these images the students had to exemplify principles of framing, hierarchy, and layers. Early in the project, the student decided to overlap this assignment with his 3D modeling and texturing work. The process began with a series of thumbnail sketches in which several geometric motifs were experimented with. Eventually the artist decided on using an orrery as the primary imagery for the triptych. Next, a mood board was constructed in order to decide the materiality for the textures and create a general sense of the colours. Following the mood board, a colour rough was generated with refined versions on how the orrerys would be laid out and the basic colours for each set was considered.

After the design work was completed, the student then began modeling the orrerys in the 3D modeling program Maya. After the completion of the models, UV maps were constructed and textures were crafted in photoshop. After the careful consideration of lighting in the scene, the images were then rendered and completed.
